Frequently Asked Questions

What can you make?

Honestly, pretty much anything. There have been rare occasions when I have had to turn down a job simply because of size. For instance, I regret that I cannot accommodate stage curtains. Other than that, if you can imagine it, I can probably make it. Besides a variety of window treatments and soft furnishings, I have made a boat bimini, fur-lined tablecloths for a wedding, bed canopies, and custom shaped outdoor furniture cushions. Just let me know what you want; and I’ll see what I can do.

How do you work?

When you call, I will ask some questions to try and get a feel for what you want. Typically, there is an initial consultation in your home where we will talk more about the type of style and fabrics you like; and I take measurements. If you have given me some sense of the types of fabrics/colors you are interested in over the phone, I may bring some fabric samples to this meeting. If you are looking for hard treatments, such as natural woven shades, I will have those samples. I bring my own portfolio of photos so you can see some of my work as well as an Idea Book to help define the type of treatments you like. At the end of the first meeting, I usually know what sort of treatment we’ll be doing and be ready to do the fabric search. At the next meeting, I will show you samples of fabrics/trim/hardware and finalize the plan. When the plan is done, I will work up a detailed estimate for your consideration. Assuming you are happy with the estimate, you give me a deposit; and I get to work ordering materials and begin fabrication. When everything is complete, I will contact you to schedule installation. After that, we stand back and admire your beautiful home!

What if I don’t have any idea of what I want?

Well, I guarantee you that you know what you don’t want, and that’s a great starting point. From there I will work with you, show you photos, maybe even sketch a little, and together we will figure out what style works for you.

I already have my fabric chosen. Will you work with fabric I provide?

I will happily discuss doing “COM” (customer’s own material) work with you, although I strongly encourage clients to consult with me before they purchase their fabric. This assures the correct yardage is purchased for your particular treatments; and if you know the pattern name/number and color, I can sometimes get your selected fabric at a lower price. I do, however, ask that you purchase your lining fabric through me. This avoids several problems and, most importantly, assures that you have the right lining for your fabric and treatment choice.

I have some drapes from my old house. Can you rework them to fit my new windows?

Whether or not old drapes can be reworked depends on several factors. The best thing to do is to give me a call.

Do you charge for the initial consultation?

No, the first meeting is free of charge and obligation. I find that with most of my clients this is sufficient to agree on a future direction. Very occasionally more time and effort on my part is needed to help someone with their decision making. In those rare cases I may charge an hourly consultation fee.

Do you work with businesses as well as residences?

Yes. While I work primarily in homes, I have commercial clients including a veterinarian’s office, restaurant and school offices.

Do you work for designers?

Yes, I provide workroom services and window treatment consultation services to a limited number of local designers.

How much to you charge?

I price each job individually because each job is unique. Different treatments and different fabrics require individual pricing. I will provide a detailed estimate so you never need to worry about being surprised. If you know exactly what treatment you are interested in, the measurements and what type of fabric you would like to work with, I can provide a rough ‘budgeting’ estimate to you over the phone.

Do you do all the work yourself?

I do about 99% of the work myself. There are one or two items that are better handled by a larger commercial workroom; and I occasionally subcontract for the work. I assume complete responsibility for the quality of their work, however.

Do you do the installation?

Yes, typically I do the installation myself or bring in another installation professional, and charge accordingly. If, however, you prefer to do the installation yourself, I will happily provide instructions.

How long does it take?

Once I have your fabric in hand, I aim for a six to eight week turnaround time. There are times when you will get your treatments faster, and unfortunately, sometimes slower. I will give you an idea of when I expect to have your work done when we finalize the plan and let you know if any unexpected delays arise.
